The martial strides rang out ever more clearly. They became the sound of marching soldiers. My father no longer deemed Madrid to be a safe place for my mother and me.

Here, between the reeking nappies, chewed-up rubber nipples and stuffed toys flung out of the pram, that one sense of the word martial died. And there, on the battleground of the Republicans and Falangists, under the fluttering flags, the beating drums and the soldiers’ clarion calls, the other martial rose like a sun that set the world ablaze, a red sun rising so proudly, so full of courage. And while the one martial gobbled up the other like Pac-Man, a smiley with fangs, my father was preparing his escape from us.

Early June 1936, he found a convenient excuse in the approaching civil war to pack my mother and me on a train to Barcelona, leaving him unencumbered and free to spend the next twenty years of his life in the company of his sonorous mistress Delia, alias The Carillon. In one of his next letters to her, he, an avid collector of model boats, ordered her to buy a model boat he had seen on the way, “because I am here in the Nautique hotel in Marseille, surrounded by sailing ships. I am certain we are heading for a happy future together. I’m so glad to be rid of Maruca. This morning, I clipped my own nails, tricky though it was.”
